Significant Research and Development Achievements of
Dr. L.L. Sharma
v For the first time bred Labeo gonius in captivity by induced breeding technique (Instl. Jorn. Acd. Ichthyol. 7(2):33-66).
v Had been actively contributing time and energy for the growth and development of Deptt. of Limnology and Fisheries since its inception in 1979 and preparatory phase, while working as SRF in the ICAR scheme and Asstt. Professor, Zoology.
v Designed, developed and fabricated three types of under water samplers which have been appreciated widely and published in reputed journals Current Science, Research and Industry and proceedings of 2nd Asian Fisheries Forum (Tokyo, Japan).
v Designed and developed five types of water filters for the SWACH/UNICEF Project, one of this filter has been accepted by the UNICEF for distribution in Dracunculosis prone areas and so far over 3 lakh such filters have been distributed by the SWACH (Pollution Research) 12(3):119-125).
v Together with other associates, developed a low cost convenient water quality (bacteriological and cyclops incidence) analysis kit which has been accepted by the UNICEF (Pollution Research) 12(3):183-185.
v Contributed significantly on Reservoir Limnology of Rajasthan especially of Udaipur lakes. In July 1993 the District Collector, Udaipur formed a technical committee for eradication of water hyacinth from Pichhola Lake. As a member of this three member committee conducted field biological survey and submitted detailed report. Considering this report the District Administration installed two conveyer belts for removing about 10,000 metric tones of water hyacinth. The hyacinth was removed within a record period of about 2 months.
Performance as HOD
After taking over as Head of the Department w.e.f. September 01, 2001 following achievements has been made by this Department:
1. Preparation of two teaching manuals on Fisheries
2. Publication of two extension booklets (released by the Director-General, ICAR and Director-General, Fishery Survey of India)
3. Publication of a book “Methods in Aquatic Ecology” authors LL Sharma and VP Saini released by Dr. Anil Kakodkar, Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission.
4. Under the kind patronage of the Dean, RCA an Aqua Gallery was established which is attracting attention of academicians and masses especially children and youths. This was inaugurated by Dr, Mangla Rai, DG, ICAR. DDG (Fisheries) ICAR and other dignitaries also visited.
5. As HOD devoted time and energy for upgrading the Department into College of Fisheries.
6. Organized ICAR Short-Course on Advances in applied limnology for management of fisheries in seasonal and perennial inland waters as Course Director from February 05-14, 2003.
7. Organized ICAR Winter School on Advances in culture and breeding of ornamental fishes from February 08-28, 2005
